Skills Builder Universal Framework

The Skills Builder Universal Framework is a progression roadmap. You can use it to start building eight essential skills, which are needed in any kind of job, and are what The Careers and Enterprise Company define as ‘employability skills’. The framework breaks down the skills into 16 teachable and measurable steps. And it also outlines what tangible progress looks like from the simplest aspects of each skill, through to more complex behaviours.

The eight essential skills are:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Problem solving
  • Creativity
  • Staying positive
  • Aiming high
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
Top tips
  • Share the Universal Framework with focus groups of students so they can contribute towards identifying strengths and gaps.
  • Audit your current provision to identify the essential skills where students have lots of opportunities to apply them – as well as where there are few opportunities to do so.
  • Use the steps of the framework to explain to students what they are learning, and structure reflection activities around them.
